The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its October meeting, but investors will be watching closely for signals that more hikes could be on the way. After raising rates by 0.25 percentage points in September, policymakers face mounting pressure to bring inflation under control without putting further strain on the U.S. economy. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is expected to maintain a cautious stance while leaving future decisions dependent on incoming economic data.
Inflation remains a major concern, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising to 3.7% YoY in September, largely driven by higher energy prices. Core inflation also moved further above the Fed’s 2% target, reinforcing expectations that policymakers may need to tighten monetary policy again. At the same time, the housing market continues to struggle with mortgage rates above 7%, while the labor market shows limited hiring despite relatively low layoffs.

Economists remain divided over the Fed’s next move. Deutsche Bank expects Warsh to signal that additional tightening may be necessary, while Evercore ISI warns that the central bank faces significant risks as it tries to balance price stability with employment. Warsh’s preference for avoiding explicit forward guidance could add to market uncertainty, leaving investors to interpret economic releases and policymakers’ remarks for clues about the timing and scale of future rate increases.
Markets are pricing in a strong possibility of another interest rate hike in December, according to CME FedWatch data cited in the report. However, some economists argue that further tightening could disproportionately hurt housing, consumer borrowing and other interest-sensitive sectors. Allianz economic adviser Mohamed El-Erian has warned that higher rates could deepen existing economic pressures, suggesting that fiscal measures may be a better response to persistent inflation. For now, the Fed’s decision is expected to be a pause, but its messaging could determine whether investors prepare for another round of hikes.
